Lets Understand difference between Mass and Weight !

So many people confuse 😕 about Mass and Weight or they think these are the same things !

But there is difference between the mass and weight.

Lets Learn !!!

Mass is measure of amount of matter contains in the object and weight of object is measure of force exerted on object by gravity.

MASS is Scalar Quantity means it only require magnitude to describe it not Direction. EX. We never say my mass is 10 kg on right direction (laugh🤣) and Weight is Vector quantity means it require magnitude as well as direction to describe it.

when you say that my weight is 50 kg, you actually referring it to mass not to weight !

because weight is force and it is measure in Newton and you never say my weight is 50 Newton right !

Remember Mass is measure in kg and Weight is measure in Newton .

Now we know weight is force and it is calculate using formulae of Newton's second law i.e. F = Ma ,in this case acceleration (a) is acceleration due to gravity i.e. g (g=9.8 m/s2)

Ex. if your mass is 50 kg then your weight will be 50 x 9.8 =

490 N

Mass is intrinsic property of object means it never change by itself.

but value of weight is depend on your location as we know that value of gravity is different at different place.

Ex. Suppose mass of one person is 100 kg.

On the surface of earth acceleration due to gravity is 9.8 m/s2 therefore weight of that person on earth is 100 x 9.8 = 980 N

weight of same person on the mars is less because acceleration due to gravity is about 38 % of that of Earth i.e. 3.7 m/s2 therefore weight of that person on mars is 100 x 3.7 = 370 N.

In space value of acceleration due to gravity (g) is zero therefore weight of that person in space is Zero ! that is called as weightlessness.

But in all of above situations Mass of that person is Always Same i.e. 100 kg ! because it does not change with location .

Therefore Mass of object is depends on how much matter it contains and weight of object is depends on how much gravitational force act on it. this is difference between Mass and Weight. i hope you understand the difference.

What will be the weight of same person (with mass 100 kg) on Moon whose acceleration due to gravity (g) is 1.6 m/s2 ? wright your answer in Comment.
